Understanding Cool Fat Cryo

Fat freezing is a nonsurgical body-contouring option for localized fat deposits. BioSkin Laser can help you explore whether controlled cooling fits your goals and explain treatment expectations, risks and alternatives before you proceed.

ABOUT THE TREATMENT

Cool Fat Cryo at BioSkin Laser in Manhattan

BioSkin Laser features Cool Fat Cryo among its body-contouring services. This nonsurgical approach, known as cryolipolysis or fat freezing, uses controlled cooling to target selected pockets of subcutaneous fat. It is designed for body contouring—not overall weight loss, obesity treatment, or removal of visceral fat.

At our Upper East Side location, a consultation is the starting point for discussing your goals, treatment areas, medical history, available equipment and realistic expectations. Treatment suitability and the device's authorized uses should be confirmed before scheduling.

How does fat freezing work?

A cryolipolysis applicator cools a localized fat bulge under controlled conditions. Treated fat cells may be gradually cleared by the body over the following weeks and months, resulting in a reduction in the visible bulge. Unlike liposuction, this method does not involve incisions, but it also does not offer surgical-level fat removal or immediate results.

Which areas can be considered?

Depending on the device and your anatomy, commonly evaluated areas may include the abdomen, flanks (love handles), thighs, upper arms, back or under the chin. Not every area or individual is suitable for treatment. The specific applicator, FDA-authorized indications and availability at BioSkin Laser should be confirmed during consultation.

Who is a good candidate?

People close to a stable weight who have discrete, pinchable areas of fat may be considered. Cryolipolysis is not a weight-loss solution and does not reliably address significant loose skin or cellulite. A clinician should assess skin condition, previous surgery, abdominal wall weakness and health history before recommending it.

What happens during a treatment?

The area is evaluated and an applicator may use suction to draw a fold of tissue into a cooling cup. Patients can experience pulling, pressure, cold, tingling or aching. Treatment length varies by device and area; the FDA describes cooling sessions that can last up to about an hour per treated area. Your provider should explain the actual protocol and any post-treatment massage.

Results, timeline and maintenance

Changes are gradual rather than instant. Visible improvement may develop over approximately two to three months, and results vary. Some people may need more than one treatment. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your overall contour; untreated fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain. No specific percentage of fat reduction can be promised.

Recovery, side effects and important risks

Many people return to routine activities quickly, but zero downtime and risk-free results cannot be guaranteed. Temporary redness, bruising, swelling, soreness, tingling and numbness can occur. Less common complications include prolonged numbness, nodules, freeze burns and contour irregularities. A rare but serious complication, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), causes the treated fat to enlarge instead of shrink and may require surgery. Treatment should be avoided with certain cold-sensitivity disorders or poor circulation in the treatment area. Disclose hernias, scars and prior surgery before treatment.

No. It is intended for localized body contouring and is not a substitute for weight management or treatment of obesity.

Results develop gradually, commonly over two to three months, as the body clears affected fat cells. Results vary.

You may feel intense cold, pulling, pressure, tingling or aching. Temporary tenderness and numbness can occur afterward.

Many people resume regular activities quickly, but bruising, swelling, discomfort or other effects can affect recovery. Downtime is not guaranteed to be zero.

Potential risks include bruising, swelling, pain, numbness, freeze burns, contour changes and rare paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), in which treated fat enlarges.

People with certain cold-sensitivity disorders or poor circulation in the target area may not be suitable. Hernias, prior surgery and other conditions also require assessment.

It primarily targets localized fat and is not a reliable treatment for significant skin laxity or cellulite. Other BioSkin Laser options may be discussed.
