Personalized microneedling at BioSkin Laser
Fine lines, lingering acne marks and uneven skin texture can be difficult to address with skincare alone. At BioSkin Laser in Manhattan, we help clients explore professional skin-rejuvenation options based on their concerns, skin history and comfort with downtime. Our published services include Alma radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, an energy-based treatment that combines controlled skin stimulation with radiofrequency heat.
During a consultation, we discuss whether RF microneedling or another resurfacing approach may be suitable. Not every skin concern requires the same technology, and results depend on the condition being treated, device settings and individual healing.
How microneedling works
Traditional microneedling uses fine sterile needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin. The healing response encourages collagen remodeling, which may gradually improve the appearance of shallow acne scars, fine lines and uneven texture. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy through the treatment tips to deliver heat at selected tissue depths. It is a different procedure from conventional microneedling and has its own risk profile.
Skin concerns we can discuss
- Acne scars: improvement in the appearance of certain depressed scars and irregular texture.
- Fine lines: gradual softening of some visible lines as skin remodels.
- Enlarged-looking pores and roughness: potential improvement in overall surface appearance.
- Mild skin laxity: RF-based options may help with the appearance of firmness in selected patients.
- Stretch marks and other scars: suitability depends on scar type, location and clinical evaluation.
Deep scars, active acne, melasma and significant laxity may require different or combined approaches. A consultation helps establish realistic expectations.
Traditional microneedling vs. RF microneedling
| Consideration | Traditional microneedling | RF microneedling |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Fine needles create controlled skin microchannels | Microneedles plus radiofrequency energy |
| Common goals | Texture, selected scars, fine lines | Texture, selected scars, fine lines and some firmness concerns |
| Recovery | Often redness and sensitivity for several days | Redness, swelling and possible longer recovery depending on settings |
| Important distinction | Needling-related risks | Additional heat-related risks, including burns and tissue injury |
What happens during your appointment?
Your visit starts with a review of your treatment goals, medical history, medications, prior procedures and skin sensitivity. If treatment is appropriate, the provider explains the specific device, numbing options, expected sensations and aftercare. The area is cleansed and treated according to the individualized plan. The number of passes and treatment time depend on the area and technology.
Preparation and aftercare
- Before: disclose active infections, cold sores, recent tanning, keloid history, pregnancy status, medications and recent cosmetic procedures. Follow provider instructions about exfoliants and retinoids.
- After: expect temporary redness, tenderness or swelling. Use only recommended gentle skincare and avoid picking at treated skin.
- Sun protection: limit direct sun exposure and follow the provider’s instructions on when to resume sunscreen and makeup.
- Follow-up: seek prompt medical advice for worsening pain, spreading redness, drainage, blisters or other unexpected symptoms.
When will results appear?
Changes are typically gradual as collagen remodels over weeks to months. Some people need a series of sessions; others may not be good candidates. Maintenance needs and treatment spacing depend on the concern, device and individual response. No procedure can guarantee scar removal or a specific degree of tightening.
Safety comes first
Microneedling is a medical procedure. It can cause infection, scarring or pigmentation changes if not performed appropriately. RF microneedling also carries heat-related risks, including burns and unintended tissue damage. A properly trained medical professional should evaluate your skin, explain the risks and determine whether treatment is appropriate.
